Supporting Individuals with Visual Impairments: Communication and Adaptation

Challenges of Visual Impairments

Visual impairments can cause individuals to experience difficulties with everyday activities such as reading, recognising faces, and walking. Some individuals may have vision loss and require support through Adaptive Training and specialised equipment.

Importance of Communication

Effective communication is crucial when supporting someone with a visual impairment. Consider the following tips:

  • Use the person's name to let them know you are addressing them.
  • Touch may be needed to help guide them in the right direction.
  • Explain the surroundings and what is in the area around them.
  • If the person has partial visual impairment, ensure your face is in full view when speaking to them.

Supporting Hearing Impaired Individuals

When communicating with someone who has a hearing impairment, it is important to be mindful of background noise. Adjust your voice volume and speak clearly to ensure they can hear you effectively.
